Meet Etel V., Survivor Speaker

On September 19, 2018, the Restore Freedom Gala: Momentum will take place at Guastavino’s in New York City. This event is always one of the most important nights of our year. And at this cultural moment, when there’s so much momentum building to end sexual violence, it’s going to be pivotal. We’d love to see you there.

For the first time in Restore NYC’s history, a survivor will be delivering live remarks at the Freedom Gala. Etel V. is a graduate of our programs and currently a assistant facilitator in our Economic Empowerment Program. Event guests will experience her journey and her healing through a video and a short speech by Etel.

Our hearts are full as we spend time filming together for the gala.

We’ve laughed and cried together while preparing for the gala, and through it all, we’ve been encouraged by Etel’s positivity and joy. We’re looking forward to sharing her story on September 19th, but for now, we want to share her lighter side. We’re delighted to introduce Etel V.!

Q&A with Etel:

What do you like about New York?
I like the buildings and the people!

What do you not like about New York?

Sushi

What are some of your hobbies?
Playing the piano [Etel picked this up while living in Restore’s safehome!], painting, and cooking.

What is your dream vacation?
To go to Hawaii and learn how to hula dance!

When was the last time you laughed really hard?
I laughed so much this week!  It was while I was talking to my brother and my sister and we were remembering things from our childhood.

What do you like about your work at Restore?
I feel restored when I can be useful to other people. It fills my soul to see other women fighting for their lives.

What is your favorite song right now?
Un Millón de Amigos by Roberto Carlos.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you’d do?
I’d build many shelters for the elderly and children and women who need help.

Do you have a favorite TV show?
Pink Panther. And Bugs Bunny makes me laugh!
